The photo on the first page of this site of Dad in the spring field with the calves always brings a smile to my face.
I took that picture one spring, when I visited the old farm. I arrived around 5 pm or so from the airport, and as I
drove into the yard, dad came pulling up in his truck. "Hop in," he said, "I have something I want to show you."
So, mom and I hopped into the truck, and we drove down the lane to the back field near the creek. It was a lovely spring
day, around Memorial Day, I think. He stopped the truck next to the fence and hopped out of the truck. We hopped
out, too, and looked around. He didn't say anything, just pointed to the little calves springing around in the field
near their mothers. They were obviously recently born, in the last week. And just as obviously enjoying their
new found mobility. Dad looked on proudly. I will never forget the look on his face. He was entranced, enthralled.
You could see how much he loved to be a farmer in the look in his eye. We stood there, the three of us, on the hill,
watching the calves play as the sun set that day. I will never forget it.
